WORTH THE WAIT

During the last couple of days I have received numerous emails regarding the launch of Scandica website. Yes, it's scheduled on August 1st and me and my team are working hard trying to make that deadline, but one can only do as much. The peak of summer beach/park photo sessions is right now and I have been out almost every day. The days when I am not out shooting, I run to the beach with my own children, trying to catch every single ray and warm breeze I can get. The time for that is right now. All I can ask is, please be patient with me. The glorious, breath taking Scandica Fine Art Photography website will be launched when it is ready. And it will be worth the wait, I promise.

AGELESS BEAUTY, CHICAGO NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY II

Like a good wine, women do get better with age.

This 38 year old mother of three is going to give an album of Classic Nudes for her husband as gift for their 15th anniversary next month. You go, Girl !

GET AWAY

I am a one lucky lady when it comes to vacationing. My husband, excellent in so many things, also happens to be a pro when it comes to arranging vacations. We try hard to stay away from resorts and notorious "all inclusives" and tend to look for something more. Something original. Something real. The fewer T-shirt shops the better, if you know what I mean. In the early years of our marriage I participated in decision making and browsed the internet with him, looking for unique and different places to visit. I soon gave up and have then given him the full responsibility to arrange our little getaways, knowing that he will take me to places I have never heard of... Places I will never forget.

The Archipelago of Finland is, naturally, closest to my heart. That's where I grew up. Sailing in the Archipelago is where you'll find me after I retire. Nowhere else has the sky such a beautiful pale blue color. Nowhere else have I seen the wind dance on top of the waves like demons, splashing water high up in the air. And the silence, when you let the sails down and turn off the engine. Everything but sailing is pointless, said Lasse Martenson, a well respected Finnish musician and passionate sailor long time ago. Mr. Martenson composed a song Stormskars Maja which always takes me home to stormy islands and windy waters and brings the taste of salty water to my mouth.

Drake Bay, Costa Rica is a breathtaking place we visited couple of years ago. It is a wilderness camp, located at the edge of Corcovado National Park. I had never experienced a sunrise in the jungle so we decided to do an early morning hike to see how the jungle wakes up. We got up before five in the morning, hiked along a small path deep into the jungle and waited. And waited. And waited. We heard the animals moving around us and even though I was told jaguars do not harass people, I have to admit I was little nervous. And then suddenly, without warning, a blood chilling roar filled the air. It was a roar and a moan, impossible to describe. The scariest sound I have ever heard. And it seemed to come from all around us. A jaguar, I thought and tried to hide behind my husband's back. - A gigantic heard of jaguars, I whispered and tried to climb his shoulders for safety. -No, honey, he said and gently took me down -The howler monkeys are waking up.

Tulum Mexico, just 2 hours south of Cancun is what I call a place for a beach vacation. Mass tourism is fast destroying the whole Riviera Maya, but Tulum still has that small place feel. We chose to stay is a small thatched hut at the beach. No AC, no hot water and not much electricity either. A palm tree grew through out of the "bathroom", and scorpions crawled all over the place. Sea turtles come to the beach at night to lay their eggs. Heaven.
In a couple of weeks we pack our bags and head back to Fort Bragg, CA. We found the quiet little village in North California long time ago and return every couple of years. There is nothing much to do to but take long walks and enjoy the view. It doesn't sound much, but when you see the view, you'll understand.

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

enough money within her control to move out and rent a place of her own, even if she never wants to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

something perfect to wear if the employer, or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

a youth she's content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her old age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .....

a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....

a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal, that will make her guests feel honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

a feeling of control over her destiny...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to fall in love without losing herself..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to quit a job, break up with a lover, and confront a friend without; ruining the friendship...

when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

that she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

what she can and can't accomplish in a day... a month...and a year...

SHOW SOME SKIN, CHICAGO NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY I

One busy Monday afternoon last fall I got a phone call from a woman, who needed some photos.
- Well, not just regular portraits, she mumbled and I honestly could see her blushing on the other end of the line.
- I need some nude portraits. You know... like naked ones.
She wanted to give an album of classic, tasteful nudes to her boyfriend as a Christmas present. She was excited and terrified at the same time.
- My boyfriend, she said, is a man who has everything. He also happens to have very expensive taste and financial possibilities to get what he wants. Finding a perfect gift for him is almost impossible !
After a frantic search on the net, browsing through dozens of magazines and asking help from everybody she knew, she was ready to give up. Sure, she found tons of gadgets, latest inventions and other man toys, but they just didn't feel right.
- Stuff, stuff, stuff, she exclaimed, he doesn't need more stuff. I want to give him something special, something he will never forget.
It hit her like lightning when she saw new family photos at the desk of her co-worker. A photo album ! Or even better, a nude photo album ! The co-worker gave her my card and here she was, slightly embarrassed but determined. A woman on a mission.
We decided to shoot at her boyfriend's place when he was out of town. It was a cold and gray Sunday morning. One of those depressing November days in Chicago, when the only thing that would cheer you up would be a new pair of shoes. Or maybe two.
-I am not sure if this is a good idea after all, Chloe said and wrapped her robe tighter around herself.
- Maybe I should get him something from HammacherSchlemmer instead...
After half an hour of talking and two glasses of wine (yes, at 9 AM on Sunday) she decided to go ahead. It took almost four hours and 400 frames (and the rest of the wine), but we got what we wanted. By the end of the session Chloe's hesitation was long gone. Holding a half bald feather boa between her fingers she threw herself to the couch and couldn't stop laughing.
- I've never had so much fun in my life, she said. - If I'd known it's going to be like this, I would have done this years ago.
Her album was ready in three weeks, just before Christmas. I delivered it to her personally, I wanted to see her reaction when she saw the final product. I wanted to be sure it was exactly what she was hoping for. And it was.
- I don't believe it's me, she said. -It is just so beautiful. I love it and I know he is going to like it too. A Christmas present he will never forget!
On Christmas Day the phone rang. It was Chloe. She was crying.
- You won't believe what happened, she cried over the phone. My stomach went upside down, it was liked somebody had kicked me in the belly. I couldn't breath.
- What, what is it ? He didn't like the pictures ? He hated them ?
- No, cried Chloe.
- He opened the present, looked through the pictures and didn't say anything. Then, holding the album, he went down on his knees and proposed. He proposed ! I am engaged !!!!
I have the honor to photograph Chloe and Patrick's wedding on July 14, 2007.

SAY CHEESE...NOT !

Every now and then I have the opportunity to do a mass shoot, photograph a hundred, or in a busy day, hundreds of children during a few hour 'come and have your child photographed with easter bunny'- type of event. It is exhausting. Imagine yourself getting down on your knees and jumping up again every five seconds, while holding a camera in your hands. Now, do that for three or four hours, non-stop and you get the idea... Let me tell you, BenGay is my best friend the next day!

It is also very demanding, a true sink-or-swim-situation, since I usually have only one minute and three frames to capture a good photo. To compare, I can tell you that my normal photo shoot takes two to three hours and I take hundreds of pictures... of one child.

But most of all it's fun. I love the one minute mini sessions with children, their innocent eyes and natural smiles. How proud they are when I compliment their new fancy summer dress. How surprised they are when I tell them that Cinderella is my favorite princess too... It's priceless !

Among the innocent faces and natural beauties there are always few unfortunate, overphotographed children. In my mind I call these poor children 'Cheesies'. A Cheesie arrives to the set, sits down, fixes her dress, crosses her legs, looks at the camera... and twists her mouth to the most terrible grin you can imagine! When a Cheesie (or her mom, to be exact) wants her photo taken, there is nothing I can do to save the situation. Not during that one minute session at least. So I just push the button and take a photo, knowing that it will turn out terrible. Cheesie's mom won't like it, Cheesie's dad won't like it and I am quite embarassed to put my name under a photo like that. A photo of a beautiful child who's lips are smiling but the eyes beg somebody to save her. Don't take me wrong, it's not the child. She only does what she has been told to do. Over and over and over again. "Smile!" "That's not a smile, smile bigger!" "Look at Mommy!" "Say cheese!"

Everybody wants pretty pictures of their children and we do a lot to get them. We buy nice clothes, we have their hair done, we get the latest megapixel cameras. The truth is, these things really don't matter. They don't, if the child is uncomfortable during the photo shoot. If she is constantly told to smile and look at the camera. Children learn fast and a fake smile is the last thing you want them to learn. Teaching them out of it takes time and patience.

So, the next time you take pictures of your children, try something else than cheese. Instead of telling your child to smile, try to make her smile. Tell a story, tell a joke. Play peekaboo. It works much better, trust me !
